Introduction

Slip on a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, hit the button, and the bus engine, the fan and the office chatter all fall away. Feels like a trick. It isn't one.

It's physics plus very fast electronics, and knowing the basics saves your money. Brands toss around ANC, ENC, hybrid, adaptive. If those words mean nothing to you, you end up paying for a label instead of a benefit. Two pairs at the same price can perform very differently.

So here's what this article does: it explains how the tech works, so your next purchase is a smarter one.

Where does this come from? Weeks of reading, but also 16 days of actually using ANC mode, about 3 hours a day, on FASTER's audio products and a few other brands.Β

Work sessions, walks, noisy commutes, evenings with the AC on. I understand this technology much more clearly now, and I'll share what I noticed along the way.

What is Noise?

Sound starts with a vibration. It pushes the air molecules beside it, those push the next lot, and a wave of squeezed and stretched air rolls outward until it reaches your eardrum.

Three terms will come up again and again.

  • Frequency is how often a wave repeats each second, counted in hertz. A bass drum or an engine sits low. A whistle sits high.
  • Amplitude is the height of the wave, and to your ear that means volume.
  • Wavelength is the distance between two peaks. Deep sounds have long ones and sharp sounds have short ones, so it runs opposite to frequency.

Where does music end and noise begin? Mostly in the pattern. Music repeats in an organized way your brain likes. Noise is a jumble. Then again, the song your neighbour blasts at midnight is noise too.

Testing showed me something I didn't expect. Some sounds simply vanished. My AC hum and the drone of a bus engine almost disappeared. A door slam, a horn, someone laughing nearby? Still there, only quieter.

The reason is predictability. A steady rumble is easy for the system to model, and it can only cancel what it can anticipate. A sudden clap or a siren arrives with no warning and is gone before the system reacts.

How Sound Cancels Sound: The Physics of Anti-Noise

It all comes down to destructive interference.

Every sound wave is a run of crests (high pressure) and troughs (low pressure). Now picture a second wave, same frequency and height, but flipped so each crest lands on a trough of the first. Together they add up to almost nothing. In engineering terms, the two waves are 180 degrees out of phase, and that flipped copy is what we call anti-noise.

A pond makes it easy to see. Toss in a stone and rings spread out. Toss a second stone at exactly the right moment so its ripples rise where the first ones sink, and the water goes flat. Anti-noise does that to air. That's the heart of active noise cancellation.

How ANC Headphones Actually Work

Flip the switch and three things happen, all without you noticing.

Tiny microphones pick up the sound around you. A processor works out its frequency and amplitude and builds the inverted signal. The speaker then plays that anti-noise alongside your music. The waves meet at your ear, the noise fades, and the music stays because the system knows what to leave alone.

Speed matters enormously. The whole loop takes a fraction of a millisecond. If the anti-noise shows up late, it's out of step and can make things worse instead of better. That's why a badly tuned pair can feel odd, with a faint pressure or a strange whooshing.

Types of Noise Cancellation

The main difference is where the microphones sit.

  1. Feedforward puts them outside the ear cup. They catch noise before it reaches you, which gives the system a head start.Β
  2. Feedback puts them inside the cup, so they hear what you hear and can correct small errors.Β
  3. Hybrid uses both for wider coverage. Most ANC headphones today, and many premium earbuds, go hybrid. FASTER's Fusion X earbuds, for example, list Hybrid ANC with 6 built-in mics.
Type Mic Position Strengths Weaknesses Best For
Feedforward Outside the ear cup Catches noise early, works across a wider range Can be affected by wind, cannot hear the final result Everyday use and budget friendly pairs
Feedback Inside the ear cup Very accurate at low frequencies, corrects errors Narrower range, can hiss or become unstable Steady rumble like AC units and engine hum
Hybrid Both inside and outside Deeper and wider cancellation More processing, more battery use, higher cost Commutes, travel and mixed environments

Then there's adaptive ANC, which doesn't run at one fixed strength. It reads the environment and adjusts. Quiet train, it eases off. Loud road, it pushes harder. I liked it most when moving between rooms, since I stopped fiddling with settings.

Active vs Passive Noise Isolation

Passive isolation is physical: ear cup design, the seal of the tips, the padding. A snug fit blocks a surprising amount before any electronics get involved.Β

Active cancellation is the electronic side, meaning the mics, processor and algorithms making anti-noise.

Testing taught me this: a great algorithm can't save a bad fit. With the wrong tip size, ANC felt weak on every setting. Once I found a tip that sealed properly, the difference was obvious.Β

The best pairs use both. Passive design deals with high-pitched sounds, which electronics struggle with, and active cancellation handles the low rumble.

What ANC Does Well and Where It Struggles

Steady, low-frequency sound is where ANC shines. Engine hum, AC units, fans, traffic rumble. That's where I heard the biggest change over my 16 days.

Sudden and high-pitched sounds are harder. Voices, clapping and sirens still get through, usually softer rather than gone. Even a good ANC can't turn a busy cafe into a silent room.

Side effects exist too. Some people feel pressure, like a slightly plugged ear. Some hear a faint hiss when nothing's playing. And the ANC eats battery.

Disclaimer: Results vary by product, fit and environment. What's described here reflects general ANC behaviour and my own testing, and it isn't a guarantee for every model.

Beyond Cancellation: Related Technologies

ANC is only one piece. A few other features are worth knowing.

Transparency or ambient mode does the opposite: mics pass outside sound in, so you can catch an announcement or talk to someone without taking the headphones off.

Wind noise reduction uses mic placement and software so wind doesn't turn into a roar. It matters if you walk or cycle outdoors.

ENC trips up a lot of people. It stands for Environmental Noise Cancellation, and it solves a different problem. ANC cleans up what you hear. ENC cleans up what the other person hears.Β

Your mic picks up your voice and everything around you, and ENC pulls the two apart. It automatically filters out more than 90% of low and mid frequency background noise while you talk, so the caller hears you and not the traffic.Β

Several FASTER products list it, including the earbuds and headphones collection, which offers both Active and Environmental noise cancellation. However, if you are looking for the best headphones in Pakistan, you should read this piece.

Personalized ANC is the newest direction. Some premium models go further. They play short test tones, listen to how the sound behaves in your ear canal, and tune the cancellation to fit you.

Choosing ANC Headphones or Earbuds: What to Check

Cancellation depth is measured in decibels. More means more noise removed, but a big number on the box isn't the full story. Ask which frequencies it applies to. About 20 dB is noticeable. At 30 dB it feels dramatic, but that's only down in the low frequencies.

Wearing them for hours? Then fit and comfort count just as much as the tech. Check clamping force, weight and ear tip material.

Battery life should be checked with ANC on versus off. Brands often quote the best number without saying which mode. FASTER lists up to 43 hours on the Rove S8 and Soluna S7, so confirm the ANC-on figure for any pair you consider.

Ambient mode and call quality are easy to forget. If you take calls often, look for mic setups that include ENC. The noise-cancelling headphones with a mic matter as much as the speakers.

Price versus real-world performance: search for the best noise-cancelling headphones price in Pakistan and the spread is huge. Priciest doesn't mean best. The right pair is whichever sits well in your ears, suits your day and stays inside your budget.

Is Noise Cancellation Safe?

For most people, yes. Two myths first: ANC doesn't push harmful sound into your ears, and that pressure feeling is a perception effect, not real pressure on your eardrum. ANC alone won't damage your hearing.

It may even help. In noisy places we crank the volume to drown things out. A 2022 study by Liang and colleagues in the Journal of Audiology and Otology (on PubMed Central) tested this. With regular earphones and headphones in noise, the average preferred level went above 85 dBA, a level linked to hearing damage. With noise-cancelling canal earphones, it stayed below 75 dBA. Less background noise, lower volume. Used sensibly, ANC can protect your ears.

One warning. Blocking traffic on a busy road is a real risk, so switch to ambient mode when walking or cycling.

Conclusion

Sound is a pressure wave. Noise cancellation builds a mirror image of that wave and plays it so the two cancel. Hybrid mics and processors working in fractions of a millisecond make it happen in real time.

Where it's heading is smarter and more personal. Think ANC that maps your ear, adapts to each room, and finally handles the sudden sounds it fumbles today.

Next time you put a pair on and everything goes quiet, remember it's not magic. It's sound talking to its own reflection, very quickly.

FAQs

Do noise-cancelling headphones have side effects?

A few. Some people feel pressure or a plugged-ear sensation, hear a faint hiss, or watch the battery drain faster. It's irritating rather than harmful. If it gets to you, turn the ANC level down or take a break.

Does ANC affect the brain?

Nothing suggests it harms the brain. With less background noise to filter, your brain has less work to do. Plenty of people say they feel calmer and less worn out, but the research on focus and performance is split.

Does ANC cause tinnitus?

There's no proof that it does. Loud volume is the more likely cause. If your ears start ringing, take the headphones off and book an audiologist.

Which is better, ANC or ENC?

Different jobs. ANC improves what you hear, ENC improves what the caller hears. Having both gives the best experience.

Do noise-cancelling headphones block background noise on calls?

ANC alone doesn't. That's ENC's job. If calls matter to you, check for an ENC microphone.
